Higher Ed Driving Web Innovation

Greetings from Cambridge, Mass., home of Harvard, MIT, and for the month of November 2007, the EduWebBuzz Blog. I’m David Aponovich, content management strategist at an interactive agency in Cambridge and Portland, Oregon, called ISITE Design

(Don’t let “Design” fool you; we operate with balanced measures of strategic thinking, creative design, and web development. I’ll attempt to bring some of each to my posts.)

I’ve met many of you at EduWeb ’07 and ’06 (and before that in Salisbury, Maryland) and I’m glad for the chance to pilot this blog and re-initiate the discussion.

Let me get right to the point. As we approach 2008, innovation and change on the web continues to evolve much like New England weather: just wait a few minutes and it will change again.

This innovation is especially visible on college and university websites. Not only do you embrace new website tactics and tools (blogs, video, social networking), you are fervently open to discussing web success and failure with each other – never mind competitive factors.

There’s a trove of great stuff happening among the web teams, admissions offices and communications groups at colleges and universities. Over these next few weeks I’ll bring to light some of the web innovations I’m seeing, best (and worst) practices to learn from, reality of technology tools (get ready for frank talk about CMS) and other relevant topics.

Please post comments and questions or, if you prefer, feel free to contact me off-blog at daponovich (at) isitedesign (dot) com.

UArts website features “Paper Cuts” student produced soap opera

papercuts.jpg
I always heard writers say, “write what you know!” That’s why I love “Paper Cuts” the University of the Arts (UArts) student produced “soap opera.” Found on both the Philadelphia school’s website and YouTube it’s about as real as it gets, even though its fiction.

From their site:

Sex. Drugs. Watercolor. It’s a new semester for the students on the 11th floor of Furness Hall, and Ryan Jefferies is especially excited because after years of applying, he’s finally secured a position as RA. Now he’ll be able to live for free and blackmail freshmen into doing anything he wants. When he meets the bubbly Amanda, he decides his semester is set - she’ll become his girlfriend. But then Jack arrives. He’s a slightly older student who has returned to art school to pursue painting. Ryan and Jack have an immediate antipathy. Soon Amanda falls hard for Jack but Jack only has eyes for Susan. Throw into the mix the sex-crazed Vanessa and Jack’s stoner roommate and and in short order sparks fly.

This past fall I did a campus visit consult with UArts and fell in love with the place. It’s a unique, bold place. I’m not all surprised to see the school support this creative endeavor.

Take a moment to watch the first season of “Paper Cuts” and then share your review by “clicking comments”

NEWS: Virginia Tech Presenting at eduWeb Conference

Great NEWS!!!

Virginia Tech will be presenting at this year’s eduWeb Conference.

Michael Dame, Director of Web Communications at Virginia Tech, will be presenting at the 2nd Annual eduWeb Conference, July 22-24, 2007, at the Sheraton Inner Harbor, Baltimore, MD.

His presentation, “The Tragedy at Virginia Tech: Crisis Communications on the Web” will provide an insider’s viewpoint of his institution’s online communications effort after the tragic events of April 16, helping every institution understand what happened and how to prepare for the unimaginable. Mr. Dame will provide an overview of Virginia Tech’s response – including a website development timeline and details about resources devoted to the effort – followed by a question-and-answer session.

Whatever crisis might bestow a higher education institution, we need not only to have a crisis communications plan but also handle it as well as those who were involved with the minute-by-minute decisions at Virginia Tech.

Early Bird registration, till May 25, at $450; after that, Regular Registration is $550 till the conference starts. Two post-conference workshops are $150 per person.

For more information, go to: www.eduwebconference.com.

Come and join us this summer at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore!

A quick intro: Jesse Rodgers

Happy New Year everyone! For the month of January I will be the guest blogger here at eduweb Buzz so I thought I should introduce myself in my first post and later post a little about what I think 2007 will bring to fun filled world the edu web space.

My name is Jesse Rodgers, I am the Manager of Web Communications at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. In the interest of brevity, I will direct you to the “about UW” page for more information about the school. As for my web experience, it has largely been on the development and project management side of web development in higher education. My web interests are in standards adoption/promotion/education, Microformats, and studying the web in my grad work. I been maintaining a blog in the Waterloo web space for almost 3 years now.

Looking forward to sharing some thoughts with you all this month…
